Here are some porcelain pieces by Guy Michael Davis. They were part of a group show of works inspired by Bosch's "Garden of Earthly Delights".
I've sort of nagged my way into a mural/fence painting deal for Community Crops, and you'd better believe that there will be some Bosch-ness up in that shiz. Because nothing spices up an urban garden like images of weird fish castles and tiny cavorting nudes.

Junk in Mah Trunk

Apparently I've been driving around with my entire childhood in the trunk of my car because when I cleaned it out the other day I found 1) The Black Stallion series box set 2) a shoebox of runner's up ribbons and 3) an envelope of American Girls paper dolls. What the heck? Some other treasures included:

This photo of my brothers and I molesting a deer in Colorado in 1996. Tube socks ahoy! This c. 1971 sewing book my mom gave me back before I was even interested in making my own clothes. Obviously I've made good use of it, hence my technically flawless bloomers, pfft.

And the creme de la creme was my old high school sketchbook. Since I am inept at xml, I have only these tiny scans to show you, but allow me to highlight their crappiness: On the left here we have Iekeliene Stange, my favorite model, with a cupcake-adorned slip-on shoe from Teen Vogue and a poem by Robert Brautigan:

If you will die for me,
I will die for you
and our graves will be like two lovers washing
their clothes together
in a laundromat
If you will bring the soap
I will bring the bleach.

On the right is Lily Cole in Hussein Chalayan. Above in bad French I wrote something like, "Without a doubt the silliest dress in the history of couture - it's called the topiary dress". On the bottom is a haiku by Taiga: "'Look, O look, there go/Fireflies,' I would like to say--/But I am alone." Emo much?
I think this one was supposed to be the "national folk costumes/ethnic patterns" spread. I'm still all about the lady matador style.
Anyone ever into Sailor Moon? I watched that, plus a bunch of Dragonball Z and Fruits Basket, but that was about the extent of my anime love. I was also pretty big into Japanese toys for a while, and brands like Tokidoki and Hello Kitty. On the bottom left page I have a random stamp and a poem from one of my dad's wacky treasure hunts. On the right page is a Tokyo subway ticket that I found in a library book, and the sketch at the bottom is copied from a bar of soap, I think? Soap or cigarettes.

Speaking of Dragonball Z, I had a big crush on Trunks. Yeah, and I was probably 15 or 16 when I drew this, if that tells you anything about my maturity. This Natalie Dee comic will explain the horse drawing - note the title. This is from a project I did the summer before college where I took ads out of Vogue and replaced the models with hamsters. Oh, the things we do when we are bored.

This concludes our short tour through my awkward, fretful teenage years. Stay tuned for more sketchbook pages and couture hamsters.

Nick Jonas and Cats in Flying Ski-Doos

So this is just me rehashing other people's hash, but some of these illustrated celebwity tweets by Odess Begay make me giggle. [sidenote: 'Odessa' is so going on my list of future-probably-not children's names. Don't pretend like you never think about these things, especially all of you ardent baby-haters.]Her other non-celebrity-tweet-related work is here, if you are at the office and looking for ways to waste time instead of finishing that exciting excel spreadsheet. Coughcough.

Happy Wednesday to thee.

Colors

This weekend just floated by, it seems. Yesterday, I didn't change out of my pajamas until 9:30 PM. Sundays are for dish washing, quiet baths, and warm quivery bunnies. After dinner, I sat at the kitchen table and drew pictures of my friends as animals. A bear with eyebrows. Two foxes holding each other in a kitchen. A sloth smoking a cigar. You know. Kind of like my creepy little lamb-baby sketches from college.
It's been a long time since I picked up my old colored pencils. Maybe 2010 is the year for an art show, instead of 2009 like I thought.

A Little Lit

So yesterday, I went to buy textbooks for my roommate, who is out of town, and I ended up buying textbooks for myself, too. Hrm, funny how that happens. Anywho, I got "Averno" by Louise Gluck, which is inspired by this old crater outside of Naples that the Romans thought was the entrance to the underworld. Louise is a former poet-laureate from Long Island and her dad helped invent the x-acto knife. Awesome.

Then I bought the complete set of Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, which is my most favoritest graphic novel. I love Iranian artists. Ala Ebtekar is very cool, too. Go read his interview on Fecal Face. Please.

Talk of Toilets, Continued

I was thinking the other day about how happy and free I feel now that I'm finished with school(for the moment). However, I do miss taking art classes and all of the neato equipment/facilities that the university provided. I haven't been able to screen print in a long time because I no longer have a power washer or a lightbox, which makes me pretty sad. Here is one of my favorite printing projects that I did in school:

The "Krunk Seat"

The assignment was to print on a non-traditional surface. I cheated a little by printing first on rice paper and then cutting and appliquéing the shapes onto the seat. At the time, I was listening to GZA's "Liquid Swords" on repeat, and I must have been overcome with visions of hip-hop grandeur, i.e. pimp cups and gold chains. A few more coats of shellac, and this sucker should be ready to use.

High Pumpkin Pie In the....Sky-y-y-y

6
This picture has nothing to do with this post, but I don't caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaare

Last night, Wiki and I hung out with Daawuud and Keert. It was just like the olden days, when we used to goof off in Arabic class. And man oh man, how I loved that class. We were trying to learn to speak Arabic from a New Zealander who wore Armani pants and consistently mispronounced everyone's names. Also, we joked about the chemistry between him and one of our classmates....and now they have been spotted canoodling outside of university on several occasions - kinda freakay!

Anyway, replace University of Nebraska-Lincoln with Village Inn, and Professor Armani with a drugged-out-Zac-Efron-look-alike waiter, and you basically have last night. There was much pie, and much much laughter(for some reason the topic of feral children strapped to potty seats really tickled me). This morning I decided to wake up at 6:20(ha!) and go run off the pie(ha!), but instead I used the extra time to figure out which bus to ride to work so I don't have to walk there, thus eliminating virtually all exercise from my life. Someone call Richard Simmons and schedule an intervention.

No More Gray Days!

1
For my thesis project, I made a children's book based off of a Manx/Japanese folktale about a shapeshifting hedgehog/badger called Lucky Piggy. It's one of the only large projects that I've ever finished in my entire life(besides that latch-hook rug that LITERALLY took me twelve years to complete, hehe)!

Just For Good Measure

One more for today:
rightsizetiger
From high school! In 2002! I am old!

Dr. Strangelamb

Since I can't load any of my photos right now, I will entertain you with a few recycled posts from my old blogs.

Photobucket
I get way too emotionally attached to my work. I gave this guy away last year, and now I kind of wish I hadn't(even if it was for a good cause). Maybe I'll turn it into a woodcut or something.

Ugh.

Ugh.

Ugh.

Today is unofficially the grossest day ever. Dare I say that I don't even know if getting my new purple hat in the mail could make it any better :( And that's saying a lot.

Here is a happy yellow page from my sketch book to make things a little brighter:

These were extra tattoo designs I did for Wiki this summer. The one on the left was inspired by a sad, beautiful poem called "Lady of Kicking Horse Resevoir" by Richard Hugo. The other is from a series of little drawings I did on the subject of loneliness. Ugh.
